Vexillolinguistics, or the study of the language of flag design description, can help improve any flag’s description by incorporating all elements and “trimming the fat” to remove words that might bring ambiguity to the flag design. The POW*MIA Flag is no exception.
As the founder of Vexillolinguistics, I hereby offer my vexillolinguistic interpretation of the POW*MIA Flag in English and Vietnamese:
“A field of Black featuring a White silhouette of a POW before a guard tower and barbed wire, with ‘POW*MIA’ above and a wreath above the words ‘You Are Not Forgotten’ below, with an overall aspect ratio of 9:14.”
“Một nền đen có hình bóng trắng của một tù binh chiến tranh (POW) trước một tháp canh và dây thép gai, với ‘POW*MIA’ ở trên và một vòng hoa phía trên dòng chữ ‘Bạn không bị lãng quên’ bên dưới.”
The Levant also contains many POWs from dozens of Semitic people groups, I therefore also offer the Arabic vexillolinguistic interpretation:
“حقل أسود يحتوي على صورة ظلية بيضاء لأسير حرب أمام برج مراقبة وأسلاك شائكة، مع عبارة ‘POW*MIA’ فوق الصورة الظلية وإكليل فوق الكلمات ‘لن تُنسى’ تحت الصورة الظلية.”
By refining these descriptions, vexillolinguistics aims to provide clear, concise, and comprehensive interpretations of flag designs, ensuring they convey their intended symbolism without ambiguity.
